Space Shuttle Final Launch: The best shuttle photos, videos and links from … – al.com (blog)

In T-minus 30 minutes, Space Shuttle Atlantis will lift off on her final mission. The culmination of the 30-year program has resulted in some worthwhile reading (and watching/clicking) all over the Web:

» From the 1981 launch of Columbia to today, the Houston Chronicle provides a look at shuttle history through photos.

» This animated graphic from The Washington Post provides a gorgeous visual timeline of the shuttle program. Be sure to click “larger video” to get the full experience of this one.

» The Post also assembled the most aesthetically pleasing history of the space shuttle legacy in this static graphic that shows a timeline of missions, plus where NASA is going next.

» And here’s another cool graphic showing a timeline of the missions over the past 30 years from The New York Times. Hover over any mission, including today’s Atlantis launch, for details.

» Scientific America took its readers through the 10 most dangerous moments in space shuttle history with a slideshow, which puts the O-ring erosion on Atlantis in 1985 as the No. 1 most dangerous incident. The O-ring is the same piece of the shuttle that caused the Challenger to explode moments after launch in 1986, putting Marshall Space Flight Center under the microscope for months after.

» The Huntsville Times collected a set of fun space shuttle facts — for example, did you know the shuttle’s flight computer has less than 1 percent the power of an Xbox 360?

» It’s a sad day for residents of the Space Coast, where more than 7,000 people will lose their jobs at Kennedy Space Center. In this video from the Orlando Sentinel, Titusville residents talk about their feelings for the last shuttle launch.

Wyrick cleared, Smith suspended in trooper investigation – WECT-TV6

RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has exonerated one state trooper accused of harassment in a recent DWI case, while another will be suspended for a period of time.

NCSHP released results of an investigation Friday into the DWI arrest of Gina Tessener from Raleigh last month in New Hanover County.  Mrs. Tessener, along with her husband Hoyt, claimed troopers harassed both of them.

Mrs. Tessener refused to take a field sobriety test and was arrested after a traffic stop by Trooper Edward Wyrick Jr.  She went to the Wrightsville Beach Police Department, where she twice blew a 0.0 on a breathalyzer.  While taking her to a magistrate to release her from custody, her husband Hoyt was pulled over by Trooper Andrew Smith.  The Tesseners claim that was set up and they believe they were treated improperly.  Mr. Tessener requested an investigation from North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue.

Friday, the report fully exonerated Trooper Wyrick, stating he was ”justified in making the traffic stop and had probable cause for a DWI arrest.  No evidence exists that supports the allegations contained within the letter of complaint.”  Wyrick returns to full duty status now.

Trooper Smith acted “unprofessional and in violation of Patrol policy,” according to the report released Friday.  Smith will go to a pre-suspension conference next week and will have to get additional training on Patrol Policy violations.  After an imposed suspension, Trooper Smith will be able to go back to full duty status.

Both Wyrick and Smith have been on administrative duty since last week.

“During the course of the investigation, a number of discrepancies were discovered between what was alleged to have occurred and what we know occurred through witness accounts and other information. The information and evidence obtained during the investigation does not support Mr. Tessener’s allegations. However, the investigation did show that Trooper Smith violated Patrol policy, and he will be disciplined accordingly,” said Highway Patrol Colonel Michael Gilchrist in a written release.

Like destruction? Dead teens? Over-the-top violence? Your luck’s in – a new trailer for Final Destination 5 has just screeched online.

The latest in the death-defying franchise revolves around a suspension bridge disaster. Said tragedy should claim the lives of an ill-fated group of people, but they survive thanks to one young man having a premonition about it.

Death wants his dead bodies, though, and he’ll do anything to get his bony mitts on them.

This new trailer shows off FD5’s central disaster from different angles to the first sneak peek, and it’s mightily impressive, with near seamless CGI.

There’s also Tony Todd returning as a creepy, in-the-know coroner (“Death doesn’t like to be cheated”) and the promise of a new twist on the franchise, with victims being able to get their lives back by killing somebody.

Check out the new trailer below…

Final Destination 5 opens 26 August.

Finally? Or make this the final one? Looking forward to a fifth round with Death? Shove us your reactions below…

Ozarks Students & Lawmakers Look To Future of Space Travel – OzarksFirst.com

(Springfield, MO) — Ozarks students are getting an assignment from space buffs on this eve of NASA’s final shuttle launch.
They’re being asked to bulk up on math and science as the future of space travel is in their hands.
The final space shuttle mission is set to blast off from the Kennedy Space Center on Friday, marking the end of an era for the nation’s space program and raising questions about the next step.
“Whoever wants to be an astronaut doesn’t want this to be the last one cause they want to be one when they grow up,” says student Madison Chittenden.
Kids say it seems like the end of the 30-year shuttle program scrubs a learning opportunity.
“They want to know more about stuff in outer space,” says student Jarrod Griffin. “That’s one of the only ways to find out about it.”
Educators admit, Atlantis’ blast-off is bittersweet.
“The shuttle program has been the main way of us interacting in space for the last few decades,” says Jill Hodge, educator at the Discovery Center.
But add the next chapter of space travel will be out of this world.
“In a few years, when we have these new plans to go someplace like Mars, astronauts are going to be more important than ever,” adds Hodge. “Astronauts will have opportunities to set foot on another planet for the first time. It’s very exciting.”
It’s why students are encouraged to keep studying
“Take math and science courses,” says Hodge.
It’s their mission to decide where they’re headed next.
“By the time a 10-year-old is 20 to 40 years old, they’re gonna have things to do and places to go that are going to be amazing,” says Hodge.
Educators think a revamped program could get people as interested in space travel as they were after the moon landing.
Missouri even has ties to the mission. NASA astronaut Sandra Magnus — a Missouri S&T alum — and three other astronauts will be aboard Atlantis for the historic flight.
More information about the crew and final countdown: http://ozarksfirst.com/fulltext/?nxd_id=484107
NASA budget cuts put the future of the space agency in doubt — at least in the short term. A return to the moon first proposed by President George W. Bush in 2004 has been eliminated and a replacement vehicle for the shuttle is still years away.
A majority of Americans still support the country’s space program.
A new Pew Research poll shows 58-percent believe it’s “essential” that the U.S. remain a leader in space exploration, while 38-percent disagree.
More than half of those polled also think the space shuttle program, which began 30 years ago, was a “good investment.” Men are slightly more inclined to approve of the shuttle program than women.
More than half of college education respondents think the program has been valuable, compared to 47-percent of those without a college background.
Three-quarters of those polled feel the shuttle program has encouraged interest in science and technology, and has led to scientific advances that have helped all Americans.
In addition, 68-percent believe the shuttle program has also promoted national pride and patriotism.
The final launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis is scheduled for Friday morning.
NASA officials are hoping the weather will cooperate, and the shuttle will launch as planned from Kennedy Space Center at 11:26 a.m. Eastern Time.
Meanwhile, NASA is taking a “wait and see” approach to tomorrow’s scheduled launch of the final space shuttle mission.
Forecasters say there’s just a 30-percent chance of acceptable conditions at 11:26 a.m. Eastern when Atlantis is supposed to blast off.
The weather improves slightly for Saturday and is better on Sunday. Weather delays typically last just 24-hours.
However, NASA may order a 48-hour scrub due to weather because the traffic around the space center could keep space center workers stuck in their cars for hours.
Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill said the final blast-off could open the door for private, government-subsidized aerospace companies to make their first forays into space.
A number of private companies, most notably Virgin Galactic, have been developing private space travel for several years in hopes of ferrying mega-rich tourists into low earth orbit in the near future.
“I think you’re still going to see a very aggressive space program, it’s just going to be fashioned differently in terms of a public-private partnership,” McCaskill said.
Americans will continue to maintain an orbital presence, with astronauts traveling to and from the International Space Station on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
But with China’s recently announced plans to build its own independent space station by the end of the decade, many are worried that America will lose its dominance in space.
